Kashmir, a heavenly state with deep imprints of history and religion on display all over, is a destination worth exploring with your family. There are several religious places to visit in Jammu and Kashmir such as Amarnath, Vaishnodevi, Hazratbal Shrine, the Gompas of Ladakh, Kheer Bhawani, etc.
The Jamia Masjid is the oldest, largest and one of the sacred mosques in Kashmir. Its location in Nowhatta, in the heart of the Old City, Srinagar, is of historic importance being the central zone of politico-religious life in the city. The masjid was constructed by Sultan Sikander in 1394 AD, which was further extended by his son. Being one of the sacred mosques, it attracts devout Muslims across the globe who believe their sins would be forgiven, after offering prayers here. About 1 lakh tourists visit this monument every year, thus making it one of the top tourist places in Kashmir.
The architectural style of this mosque is known as Indo-Sarascenic style which means that it draws influences from both Indian and Persian architecture. The British, later, heavily used this style of construction while maintaining a Colonial-style base. The mighty structure has suffered destruction by fire thrice in the years 1479, 1503 and 1674 but was restored to its original design and architecture. Maharana Pratap Singh is remembered here for his initiative and financial support in restoring it the last, with Aurangzeb Shah.
The mosque is built to house 33,333 people excluding the Imam. Made up of burnt bricks about 4 ft thick, there are three huge entrances on the south, north and east sides while the west has a Shah Gate for entry. The interior of the mosque has 348 columns and 4 minars covered with sloping roofs. The minars have spiral stairs constructed for roof maintenance, taking one upto the lounge from where, entire city of Srinagar can be seen. The garden of the mosque is made in the Mughal Charbagh style with four lawns and a fountain, lined with Chinar trees.
